Sixtyfive Asian girls believed to be Punjabi are in the US jails for trafficking drugs and more than 100 Punjabi boys have lost their lives in drug war in the British Columbia (BC) state of Canada.

Though Punjabis still are considered a hard-working community in the West, their younger generation has also earned notoriety as they have ‘attained’ domination in the flourishing drug trade in Canada and even the US in one decade.

Over 70,000 Punjabis suffer from AIDS’

“According to unofficial estimates, over 70,000 Punjabis are suffering from AIDS.” This was stated by philanthropist and NRI Dr Raghbir Singh Bains while talking to The Tribune.

Settled in Canada for around 18 years, Dr Bains is nowadays in India and is spreading general awareness about AIDS, especially among the youth.

The 72-years-old NRI, who usually comes to India every year, has addressed a number of seminars at Khalsa College, Jalandhar, and other educational institutes in Nawanshahr and Kapurthala districts.

30 illegal Punjabis caught in France

Thirty illegal Indian immigrants travelling in "inhuman conditions" were stopped while crossing the French Alps in a small truck,the police said.

"They were packed together, standing up, in inhuman conditions in an area of less than six square metres. It was horrible," Michel Drezen, head of the border police in France's Haute-Savoie region, said yesterday.
