Jassi Jaisa Koi Nahi

One of the most popular Punjabi pop artistes, the singer sure seems to have no airs about the fact. So even as we seek him, while he was in town to perform live at a prominent club to get an interview, Jassi happily spares time for LT. We start straight by asking him about his upcoming album. “The album is actually a blend of Punjabi folk, Sufi and pop, and it took me the longest time to compile this album.

I’ve tried to maintain an authentic Punjabi folk flavour in the songs, which one rarely finds in Punjabi pop albums. It’s slated to release in February,” tells Jassi. We next ask him the second new thing happening in his life – a reality singing show that’s soon going to be aired on NDTV Imagine.

Revealing a li’l about it, he shares, “In this show, all established singers like Baba Sehgal, Sapna Awasthi, Anaida, Jaspinder Narula, myself will be competing against each other.” But wonder with so many such shows already on air, how’s this one going to be different? “What’ll set this show apart is the fact that the amount collected through SMSes from viewers, will go to various charities. And that’s exactly why we all have come together to be a part of it,” he adds.

Though this part of his upcoming show may have impressed Jassi, but public voting is not what he stands by. “As long as providing a platform to the budding singers is concerned, these reality singing shows are good. But what I don’t approve of is that these singers are judged by common people through SMS who don’t have any knowledge about music and singing. That’s unfair.”

Coming back to his life, we get on with asking him, who’s otherwise quite a shy guy in real life, of being accused of shooting vulgar videos for his albums. And he defends, “Har cheez ko dekhne ka apna-apna nazariya hota hai. Ek cheez kisi ko kharab lagti hai toh woh shayad dusre ko achchi lage.” Jassi’s music has always been a hit. So what’s his success mantra? And looking up heavenwards, he shoots: “Gaana hit hona ya na hona sab upar wale ke haath mein hota hai. From my side, my endeavour has always been to make songs which are melodious and sound good to my listeners.” He adds, “Also, with the advent of so many FM channels, good songs are reaching out to one and all and being liked on the basis of their music.

There was a time when songs became a hit because they had appealing videos.” What’s more, for those who didn’t know, this good looking singer, has dabbled with theatre too and is all set to make a foray into acting. “For now, I can only tell that I’m doing a Punjabi movie called Ek Onkar and it’s slated to release sometime in December,” he shares. So, any plans of moving to Bollywood? “Well, I have been getting offers from Bollywood and I am open to the idea too. But I wouldn’t want to work in a hard-core commercial film. I’d rather be doing parallel cinema. And also, I don’t consider myself a hero material. So you’d more likely see me doing supporting roles,” says the very down to earth singer on a parting note
