'No support from SGPC in turban row'

PATIALA: A representative of France-based United Sikhs Forum, who is contesting a case against France government's decision to ban turbans, said that he was not getting adequate support from Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the supreme body of the Sikhs.

Gurdial Singh, a citizen of France, also called upon the Indian government to pursue the case with French counterparts more effectively. He said that the Sikhs living out of India have been demanding the Indian government to frame Sikh Personal Law, which would help them contest their cases in foreign countries in a better fashion.

"On claims raised by us on different issues courts demand proofs or a law. But since it is no where documented, our claims stand weakened," said Singh, who is contesting case against France government's decision to ban Sikh's turbans.

He added that all the issues, faith and precedence be documented in Sikh Personal law. The Sikhs have weakened in French courts but have decided to take up the matter in European court of Law and later to International Court of Justice if need be, he told mediapersons here.

Talking about the law passed by France in 2004 that bans wearing of religious symbols, which is being contested by the Sikhs, Singh feared in case the law was implemented in France, other European countries would also follow it.
