Amritsar to host Sikh film fest

To promote Sikh history and culture, the first-ever Sikh film festival will be organised at Amritsar in the beginning of next year, that is 2009, which will be dedicated to the 300th celebrations of Gurta Gurgaddi Diwas of Guru Granth Sahib.

The Harimandir Sahib (meaning Temple of God) is also commonly known as the Golden Temple or Darbar Sahib (Divine Court). It is situated in the city of Amritsar in Punjab. The Golden Temple is a living symbol of the spiritual and historical traditions of the Sikhs. It is a source of inspiration for all Sikhs and their chief place of pilgrimage. The temple with it's glistening gold covered exterior stands in the middle of a square tank with each side about 150m with an 18m path on all four sides. The Harimandir Sahib has entrances and doors on all four sides.

Amritsar, May 24 - Sikh students wanting to get admission to the SGPC-run technical colleges in Punjab under the 50 per cent reserved category will have to undergo an identity test. Not only this, their name tag should either be Singh or Kaur and they should “not believe in any other sect”.

NRI woman killed in Amritsar

AMRITSAR: An NRI lady, who arrived in the city to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple, was killed when she fell from a rickshaw after robbers attacked her.

The incident occurred when Kalpana Walia, along with her husband Paramjit Singh Walia, was going in a rickshaw on the Lawrence road in the city on Sunday night.

In his report to the police, her husband said two motorcycle-borne youths attacked them and tried to snatch the purse of the woman, who fell from the rickshaw during a scuffle and was declared brought dead when rushed to a hospital.

The event was held at Khalsa College grounds here on Saturday night. Danandeep Singh of Pathankot and Tejinder Singh from Baroda were adjudged first and second runners-up, respectively.

John Leahy (53) from Ireland came back to the city after his eye treatment last year from Dr Rohit Om Parkash and Dr Ajay Khanna of the Dr Om Parkash Eye Institute here. He is the first foreigner from a developed country during the past 17 years who received eye treatment in the hospital, claimed Dr Rohit.

Holy city on high alert

A red alert has been sounded in Punjab, in view of the blast at Shringar cinema hall in Ludhiana. The security has been beefed up at major religious and tourist spots including the Golden Temple and Durgiana Temple here. Security has also been tightened at the Amritsar international airport, railway station and bus stand.

Private publishing of birs banned

District magistrate Kahan Singh Pannu today imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Amritsar district to ban publication of birs of Guru Granth Sahib by private publishers.

The orders have been issued three days after the incident in which activists of the Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Committee blackened the faces of two sons of publishers Jeewan Singh Chattar Singh in public.
