NRI prof honoured with doctorate degree

LONDON: Leading NRI industrialist and philanthropist, Prof Nathu Puri has been honoured with a doctorate degree in engineering by the London South Bank University.

"It is a great honour for me. Coming here in 1966 with very few resources, I could have never dreamt of this day," Puri said after receiving the degree.

Prof Deian Hopkin, Vice Chancellor of the University described Puri as "a successful industrialist and entrepreneur, renowned philanthropist and devoted supporter of education - not to mention Indian cricket".

LONDON: A 23-year-old Sikh woman stabbed her Muslim lover's wife to death as she was carrying his baby, a British court has heard.

Dentistry student Harmohinder Kaur Sanghera allegedly knifed 11-week pregnant teenager Sana Ali of Pakistani origin nearly 42 times in her Greater Manchester residence in an act which was "borne of jealousy and desperation".

NRI detective victimised by bosses

LONDON: An NRI detective was victimised by his bosses when he was refused promotion in 2005 as he had earlier won a race discrimination case against them, an employment tribunal has found.

Detective Gurpal Virdi sued the Met in 2005 after being passed over for promotion.

Virdi was arrested in 1998 for sending racist hate mail to his colleagues. The Met's actions in that investigation led to the force paying out 2,40,000 pounds after being found to have racially discriminated against the detective. He later joined work.

NRI woman jailed for overtime scam

LONDON: A 22-year-old woman postal employee from Punjab, who was to fly to India to get married next month, has been jailed for a year on charges of making false overtime claim of 40,000 pounds from Royal Mail.

Mandish Kaur, a resident of Wilford Grove, worked at the Beeston office of the Royal Mail, the national postal service of the UK.
